Autumnal Sunday in Merano

After the intense Grape Festival time, I finally had a week-end for myself to spend as I wish! My walk today gave me the chance to let me enwrap by the gorgeous autumnal colours in Merano... Absolutely fantastic :)
The images don't need any comment... See them :)

A beautiful experience

stony giant grapeTwo weeks without writing... I nearly felt guilty and thought even more time had passed...! Now I have so much adrenalin moving through my veins that I have to write what happened 2day :)
A troupe of the tv sender ORF came to Merano to make some shoots of some prearrangements of the Merano Grape Festival. We went to the Promenade where the market is being prepared and filmed the beautiful stony giant grape made by the diligent workers of the department for Municipal authority streets and infrastrutures last year.stony giant grapeMunicipal plant nursery Merano and the gardeners showed us how they prepare the red and white carnations they fix on the eagle (the emblem of Merano). The eagle is in the domicile of the department for Municipal authority streets and infrastrutures, awaiting to be prepared for Sunday :)
Then we went to Marling, where Mr. and Mrs. Arquin welcomed us with homemade Strudel and coffee. The carriage is already in a advanced building phase, there were various men working on it, hammering the apples with nails on it. apple crown of Marlingthe Goidnerhof - absolutely perfect and everybody happy :) These are the kind of expereinces which make my stressy job worth it :)

Summer is back again :)

As I went lunch break yesterday, I couldn't believe at what I was seeing and feeling! The sun was shining bright in the sky and I could feel 30 degrees on my skin! We are at the end of September and it's still summer :) Cool :) So I went to the gym and decided that I couldn't stay indoors. I went jogging :)
I made my usual route, from the winter Promenade to the Gilf and up to the Tappeiner. I couldn't believe I had to shorten my trip because it was too hot...! I felt lucky :)

The castle on the hill is the Zenoburg.

Bio, etc.

Last Friday I got my fortnightly Biokistl. The Biokistl is a nice service which settled in South Tyrol some years ago. You sign in by Internet, choose the size of the "Kistl" (chest) you need and the things you absolutely don't want and those you could live at :) Then, they bring you the "Kistl" at home early in the morning, so that you're able to store them, before going to work. Of course also Merano is provided with this service. As I wasn't really a big fan of vegs and fruits, but I knew they are healthy, I found this solution to get accostumed to having some vegs in my fridge :).
Last Friday in my "Kist" I found some plums... I love them dry, but I can't stand them fresh... What was I supposed to do? I looked at my "So kocht Suedtirol" (that's how South Tyrol cooks) recipes book in search for inspiration and found a cool recipe for a cake and just baked it :) Let's see how my friends will like it! :)

Apples, apples, apples :)

On Tuesday I took my car and drove to Marling, a village on a hill just 5 minutes from Merano. I had a meeting with the president of the tourist office of the town, a very gentle man. During the last three years I called him to ask him if he would bring the carriage with the apple crown to the procession of the Grape Festival in Merano. This year I made him a surprise :) I asked him if he could dedicate me some of his time for a brief interview about the history of the carriage. As the carriage has been his baby during the last 15 years, he accepted with enthusiasm to make an interview with me. Also this carriage needs several days for its preparation. There must be at least three persons for three days to create it and you need one day to dismantle it. Over 500 kg apples and 14 kg nails!! Also this carriage has been created 1951 for the Landesmusikfest (the X-large version of the Merano Grape Festival) and Mr. Arquin could even find a picture of the carriage in 1951! I love history... :) After the Merano Grape Festival, the carriage is exposed in Marling for at least two weeks in the central place of the village.
I'm working hard for this event, but I think it's worth it. Every year it's a big emotion for me to see so many people coming to Merano and interacting for passion for music, for tradition, for nice food, for the beautiful things of life. And for me it's cool to have a role in all this too.

So many things :)

This has been a pretty full week :) September is a stressy month for me anyway, but this week I had also some interesting happenings I can still hardly recall :)
On Monday it was the turn of tradition, I went to Algund to interview some of the guys who take their time every year to rebuild the giant grape for the carriage marching during the big procession of the Grape Festival Merano. It's an amazing thing that people dedicate time and passion for tradition every year just for the sake of it. It's an honour for them to prosecute a familys usage. One of the two guys I could interview is the grandchild of the man who created the carriage 1951. They will start rebuilding it two days before the Festival (16. October) and I'm allowed to go there, take some pictures and of course... to help them ;)
On Thursday I met a friend of mine and we decided to go to eat sth at the Sardinian restaurant "Mirto" in Merano. The temperature was still as nice as to allow us to eat outdoors. I took the usual lamb dish with vegs and something really special for dessert: a beer-Tiramisu!!! You wouldn't believe it, it's great!! Tasty but delicate at the same time, fresh and creamy... Yum! We had a nice chat and a great dinner and got home pretty late... ;)
Saturday was a great day again, I had the chance to cooperate for the Children Festival in Merano. The Tourist Authority of Merano organised a travelling fairy-tale telling. We had a professional narrator and a few little children curious to listen to her stories. The first leg was the Kallmuenz park, an amazing place for it's quiet and magic atmosphere... Then we took our blankets and bottles of water and went to the park of the Thermal Baths. You feel totally surrounded by the mountains there... Some elder people passed by and briefly listened to our stories smiling :) The city was packed with children and their parents taking them from one game to the other, fortunately the weather contributed to the success of the event :)
During the afternoon we went to the 2. ECM BBQ. The ECM is the English Club Merano in Facebook, a club for people talking in English in Merano, started by a good friend of mine. The first idea was to meet for aperitives, then we organised a BBQ and yesterday we had the 2. Due to the uncertainty of the weather, some members purposed to keep it in a court they own. It is a get-together of nice people knowing each other, meeting there for the first or the second time, staying together easily and talking about many different things. It's always really funny that there is a huge quantity of any kind of food, from Indian, to American, to Italian, to South Tyrolean... It's a cool mix of cultures and of people talking English, German and Italian just as they wish, one of the nicest groups I ever joined :)

Sunny September

The days are finally getting fresher now. As nearly every year September is wonderfully sunny :) It happens to have rainy and windy nights, after those the day appears totally clean - washed by the pattering water - and colourful.
During the day you can still walk in your T-shirt under the sun and enjoy the bright green still dominating the landscape.
My favourite trail for walking and jogging is the beloved Tappeinerweg, you can reach it in 10 min. by walking and in a few steps you already watch over Merano and its valleys. An amazing gift of the Austrina doctor, botanist and anthropologist Franz Tappeiner, who made it possible to have so many Mediterranean plants cropped in Merano. Probably the only city in the alps with its own palm trees, cacti and cluster figs.
On Saturady I enjoyed a nice walk and watched the many flowers, grapes and apples growing in the sun... Cool :)

Good things for me & for the community

This week I did some good things for me and for the community.
I had a bad start Monday morning, chaos and stress all the time, but then I could spend my lunch-time at the fitness center of the Merano Thermal Baths. After a nice aerobics training and a restoring shower the world really looks much friendlier :) The plans for the night were also pretty interesting: a gorgeous concert by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Kurhaus, the second of the long series branded Merano Music Festival. That kind of music, the beautiful late summer atmosphere and the majesty of the Kurhaus are a veritable life blood for the souls...
Apropos blood, today I went to the hospital of Merano to make a donation. The ambience is always very nice there. Dr. Platter, responsible for the the medical part of the organisation, uses to come over to the volunteers just like a father would do, asking them if the're all right. The nurses do their job with professionlism and tranquillity, also really caring for the patients well-being. There is always nice music accompaning you while you wait for your turn and after having donated you can have the second part of the foreseen breakfast. You are allowed to leave the place, only when you are sure to be all right. I am a bit weekened because of the donation, but I also feel good because I know I've done something good for the community. :)

Looong week-end

Last week my week-end began on Thursday. A simple call from a sweet friend of mine, asking me if I wanted to go to concert the same night. Chico & the Gypsy were playing at the Gardens of Trauttmandorff Castle! We had a great night! Singing, dancing and laughing all the time, an amazing scenery was surrounding us all...

On Friday began the Matteotti Street Festival, a party with rock music and nice food to eat. We went there on Saturday and had some gorgeous chanterelles with dumplings and vegetables by Erwin's Pasta Fresca.
After that we enjoyed the dessert by Poehl, a tasty Sacher and I was in peace with the world!

The day after I got up early to meet my mum and a friend for a trip in the mountain. We went to Voeran, left the car at the parking place and went up to the station by walking. It took us nearly two hours, it's 900 m altitude difference, fortunately it was fresh and shady, so we could go up without suffering the heat. As we arrived, we rewarded ourselves with a big, sweet breakfast: coffee and self-made cakes...! Wow :)

Busy, dreamy summer nights in Merano

Every year the whole thing starts the third week of July. Five long Tuesdays and twice as many summer nights take place in the heart of the town. I had the fortune to live some of them after my holiday abroad. I went to the long Tuesday last week, enjoyed a gorgeous fish meal on piazza della Rena and watched beautiful models dressed with autumnal, South Tyrolean, night garments and pretty lingerie. A dreamy night with a beautiful bottle of Lagrein for my mum and me. Life can just be so simply amazing! Yesterday we went to the last Long Tuesday, which was dedicated to theatre and did some shopping because we thought we would get some tickets of the shopping lottery "buy & win" and... guess what? We got into the only shop not participating at the initiative! Gosh!

Anyway... nearly every night the tourist office of Merano also organised a different concert, from jazz wiht the Zato so sings 4et,
to Latin American music to Abba. Tonight it was the turn of the "Rivali", performing beautiful blues, soul and funky music, taking you back in time, as well as energic and funny songs by Sugar. Friday evening will conclude the series with a concert dedicated to the 80ies. In the night the air is wonderful, the heat disappears and a nice breeze takes its place. Merano is packed with enthusiastic people enjoying the last summer nights of this year.

A new situation again...

After two weeks of inexorable sun in Rhodos, here I am in Merano again and... guess what? It's raining!! I can't believe it! I wasn't really thinking of doing great things during my last holiday days here, but this weather is rather all but stimulating... :(
I hope for it to stop the next days :) Merano will be animated by a Long Tuesday in the center and a Summer night on the Promenade.

A few steps into nature and towards good music

Last Sunday I had a strangely intensive day. Actually I'm taking advantage of my new big passion for hiking and go any time I can and find some willing friends following me in some improvised excursions. By now I manage to go up to the mountains once a week on Sundays :) This time it was the turn of the "Meraner Hütte". We started from Merano, drove 20 min. till Falzeben and went up by walking. As we reached the "Rotwand" we decided to go further to reach the Meraner Hütte, it took us another hour. Close to our destination we met a group of blond horses, quietly browsing among people caressing them gently. I liked to see them, even if I'm deadly scared about hourses - and they know it...! After these 12 km we could enjoy a South Tyrolean meal, the climate - approx. 15 degrees - permitted us to eat dumplings even in summer ;)
As I came back home I was quite wrecked, I rasted a bit and then got ready for a jazz concert in the Puccini Theatre: it was the last night of the Merano Jazz Festival. My sweet mum and I could enjoy the Dave Douglas Brass Ecstasy. Funny, entertaining and affecting, just as good jazz music can be :)

Old beauties touring in Merano

The last but not least rally of veteran cars - touring through Merano - planed for this year, took place this week. On Thursday the old beauties from all over Europe drove through the "Lauben" in all their elegance. The drivers - friends or couples - had a colourful cap and seemed to enjoy it a lot. Fortunately the weather contributed too, unless the major part of the participants should have droven with the top closed over their heads ;) From time to time there was one of them driving too fast and the organizers had to make any kind of gesture to make them slow down in order to give them a little present :)
I could watch some of them just a few steps away from my office :) Despite of the strong smell of gasoline, it has been an emotion :)

Hot, hot Merano - escape in the fresh Pfossental

2day it was just so hot in Merano, that I didn't even want to go to the pool...! Who knows me, also knows that's pretty uncommon ;) I wanted to escape somewhere I could breathe fresh, healthy air. Called up some friends and went to the Pfossental, a small valley reachable from the Schnalstal. It took us 50 min. by car from Merano. In the car we already felt the temperature changing :) How good! We parked the car and started hiking up from alp cottage to alp cottage, along the way we saw many goats and cows on the steep slopes. As usual the cows enjoyed their time without bothering about our discrete passage.
Just a moment before it started raining we could make halt at the Rableidalm. There we could enjoy some nice speck and alp cheese with homemade paarl bread. A fresh ender juice accompanied the biggest cheese omelette I've seen in my life! I couldn't finish it off, even though it was absolutely delicious! On the way back we saw some ibexes far up on the mountain and we went to the Gasthof Jägerrast to have some beautiful strudel and rolade... Yummy!!!
Guess what? In the meantime Merano got a bit fresher and I didn't have any dinner :)

Jazzy time in Merano

Sunday will be the last concert day of the Südtirol Jazz Festival Alto Adige. The series of jazz concerts boasts a long tradition and brings the beloved genre all over South Tyrol.
Last Tuesday I could enjoy the travelling concert just outside of my office. Funny, delightful, jazzy notes in Merano...! The next appointment is the Merano Jazz Festival, July jazzes!

Serenely losing my way in the labyrinth garden Kränzel

Wednesday I had the chance to visit the fascinating labyrinth garden Kränzel in Tscherms, a few minutes by car from Merano. After an exquisite glass of Cabernet-Lagrein and some lovefully prepared appetisers, the rain stopped and we could make our way barfoot into the fresh garden.

We went through some small labyrinths decorated with amazing artworks and reached the horizontal labyrinth - which origin goes back to the ancient Greek culture - representing the personal development of people, making their way to the center of it. There we could experience a deep meditation moment.
In the small lake next to it we could hear the toads quacking - some people love them, some do really not, it's funny...!
Then we proceeded to the 30 m long tasting table, the only unsailable artwork in the whole garden.
A bit of emotion mixed to fear cought me as I entered alone in the last, big labyrinth. I decided it to be a moment for me only, in order to live an intense experience with myself. A nice guide told me some details of the project, then she met another girl and I continued alone. As I finally got out of the labyrinth I could reach the others up the grassy amphitheatre, from where I could see what I passed through.
Two hours passed in a blink, some very well invested time indeed :)

Elegant musical end of June

What could be a better end for June, if not colourful performances of the Cambridge Morris Men on the Promenade and the exhibition of veteran Citroens all through the town center?
Despite of the rainy weather the 11 dancers who came to Merano from the UK found the energy and the joy for dancing in front of the public, enjoying the performance with a bit of curiosity for the colourful costumes dedicated to the celebration of spring.
The Citroen veteran cars had the pleasure to be well received in Merano for the 5th time last week-end and bore the thick raindrops elegantly.

Oh, I nearly forgot...if you take a closer look at the picture, you will see a green pianist in the background... It is one of the extraordinary creations of the
Municipal Nursery Merano. :)

Fine eating delights

Last Saturday I wanted to celebrate my birthday the whole day. A gorgeous breakfast with a tasty cake with redcurrants and a delicious lunch in a place I always wanted to try. The Kallmünz Restaurant in Meranos town center. We had a lovely weather, it was sunny and mild and could sit in the small court of the castle. Fish, vegetables and meat are proposed with a very special, gentle touch of Asia and they suggest wonderful wines, which blend perfectly with the dishes.
We had king prawns and tagliata and some beautiful dessert. As we went back home, we were very, very happy ;)
The night was dedicated to my family and my dearest friends, we went to the
Brauerei Forst, in its beautiful Biergarten. Nice wine, lovely fish, veggies and a lot of joy :) Last but not least, a gorgeous, enormous cake by Mignon, one of the best pastry shops in Merano...! You could live at their chocolate icing! Well at least I could...! :)

It's raining man!

As I came back from Innsbruck 2day, I hoped it wouldn't be raining so much in Merano too. It's amazing to be able to cross from a nation into another, so different one, and having 10 degrees difference after an hour and a half trip by car! As I arrived, it was hot and just silently, gently drizzling on the trees, what doesn't impede plenty of leaves to fall so much earlier than they should... And now it's getting heavier and heavier, with some strong wind gust from time to time... I've brought my sunflower into the dining room again and hope it will see the sun again 2morrow.

June, June, June

I often really wonder what's all about June. They used to say that nothing happens in Merano in that period of the year, well, people still always say that nothing ever happens in Merano, but that's another story.
This year, as 2008, there are many things planed for this month. Every year, in addition to the standard events there are some other purposed by active people. Yesterday for example, about 60 fantastic veteran cars of the prewar time have been exposed on Piazza Terme, it was a part of the
DAVC Alpenfahrt. Fascinating, nostalgic, curious, sometimes funny... people could only admire them for the whole day...

What a gorgeous week-end!

We just had a spectacular week-end!
While some pharmacists were still strolling around with their black bags and their heads full of new information and knowledge, Asfaltart had its start with a funny parade in the heart of the city. Jugglers, musicians, jokers and artists of any kind walked up to Piazza della Rena to celebrate the beginning of one of the funniest and beloved events in Merano. The performances could be admired by the folks until midnight.
The day after - Saturday - the "Kurpromenade" was awaiting another event, many persons where looking forward to: the "Meraner Frauenlauf". A course for ladies only, a fair contest opened to all passionates who want to get the heebie-jeebies for the emotion to run among other 500 enthusiasts. "Pretty woman" and many lovely bio-specialties received the heroines after having reached the finish line. There was a lovely corporate feeling in the air...

On Sunday the street artists diligently amused their public till evening and another edition was finished again :)

And now, after a sunny, windy day I'm happy to recollect these impressions and feel lucky I could be here this week-end!
